Jonny Wilkinson returns to action

There was no hiding the relief on Jonny Wilkinson's face after his latest return to competitive action helped Newcastle Falcons to a 32-21 win over Sale Sharks, which guarantees they will be playing Guinness Premiership rugby next season.

The 27-year-old England star has been beset by a bewildering sequence of injuries since his famous drop-goal in Sydney 29 months ago, and yesterday's return to action was the sixth time he has made an injury comeback since that celebrated night.

Wilkinson admitted his extended spell on the sidelines has driven him to distraction.

"Not playing has had a massively detrimental effect on my life," he said.
